part time job "desired wage" too high?
Asked by Fran
i turned in a bunch of applications for jobs at my local mall on monday. minimum wage is 8 dollars where i live but i put 10 dollars as desired wage on all applications. my job experiences are : sales associate/cashier at a retail store for 8 months ($7.00/hr) & currently working as a receptionist at a photo/commercial studio, been 3 months($15.00/hr) I think putting 10.00 as desired wage was a mistake; will employers look at that and think i'm greedy and ignore my application? Also, I marked "full-time" instead of "part-time" since I'm expecting to work 30 ~ 34 hours a week. One store told me that I could only work full time if i wanted to be a manager, (which won't work for me since i'm only 18 and i've never been a manager haha) Anyway, did I make a mistake? What should I do? Call them everyday and ask them how my application process is going? Thanks

Something like that would get me to throw your application in the trash immediately. I am a manager for the world's largest print and ship company and one thing that I like to see is when people put down negotiable on the pay rate. So they are willing to talk figures with me.

I have plenty experience in that industry and the answer is Yes. Putting $10 on your apps probably killed your application right away. Only the managers make $10 and over. Your best bet is to just keep calling them and following up. If they are interested in conversing with you, let them know about the change.
