Why do so many US Postal Service employees hate their jobs?
Asked by flavenoid
I know several people who work for the USPS and they all hate their jobs. Why does it seem that such a disproportionate number of employees hate working for the postal service?

I think that a large population of any given workforce, whether it be Real Estate, Physicians, Sales Clerks, or Postal Workers, dislike their job. The US Postal Service employees nearly 700,000 people, one of the 3rd largest US employers. They offer great pay, benefits, and easy sick leave! Who wouldn't want that? Now with that being said -Monotony is a b!tch, crazy days off, crazy hours, and being at the whim of upper management would make anyone feel like going postal! While I agree that a USPS job can suck, it is up to the individual to make him or herself happy...and if that means going out on a limb and finding a new job or just sucking it up and take the great pay and benefits and make the most out of it. It could always be worse...we could all be jobless and hungry. We should try to be grateful for what we have and accept the things we can't change and make the most of it.

"Because the mail never stops. It just keeps coming and coming and coming. There's never a letup, It's relentless. Every day it piles up more and more, but the more you get out, the more it keeps coming. And then the bar code reader breaks. And then it's Publisher's Clearinghouse day..."

Because it is BORING! There are no bonuses or recognition of any kind. Most employees start drinking after a while to numb the day. My supervisor got a DUI leaving the parking lot of work one day. This is why they go 'postal' and go on a killing spree.

Doing the same day everyday over and over again. Who wouldn't hate it/go crazy. Mail is one of the few jobs that don't change.

for the work you do there is no other job that can compare with the pay and benefits. outstanding job security and the likely hood of termination for performance issues is nill. if you know several people who hate their job ask them to quit, there are waiting list to get a postal job.

umm, my mother is a postal worker... her only complaint was her feet from walking too much... but when they gave her a rural route where she drove the truck she loved it....
she thinks it's a pretty easy job, doesnt require much thinking, just knowing how to count, lol...
if they hate the job, it may be the people there... or they got attacked by one too many dogs, lol.

Work 6 days a week, alot of government politics they have to abide by. If they walk their route, they walk 5+ miles per day in the hot sun, rain, snow, wind & all kinds of nasty bad wheather. Pay is really good - but for some people the pay isnt worth the daily grind.
