Another Question, Weary of Being a Jailer, any Advice?
Asked by kalli w
I'm applying for jobs, I dislike the one I'm in due to family reasons, and some other issues. I have applied to a dangerous job that might or might not, be something I like, how would I go about this if called in for an interview? (its a position for jailer from 7p-7a at a 152 bed facility), reason I wanted the job because my "intended" major is Criminal Justice and I don't know what I like in it job-wise. I wouldn't mind trying it, however wouldn't like the staunch commitment. Thanks!!

I currently work in a county jail. We house about 140 inmates. Their crimes ranging from failure to vaccinate their pets to rape and murder. It is not easy to deal with issues that they bring in, but you can get by. If it is not something you are really sure you want to do, don't get involved. It is a huge commitment, both in time and thoughts. best of luck to you either way.
as far as personal safety goes, I feel very safe working there. even the worst criminals know there is a line between acting like a hardass and trying anything that might hurt an officer. It also helps that I'm 6'3 and weigh 235. We have smaller men women that work there too (i don't mean that women can't do the job as well, i'm just saying that regardless of size or gender, your personal safety isn't really an issue. ), As long as you treat EVERYONE fairly, you will get all the respect you give. They ask you for things, listen. They demand things from you, up to you. They know that if they act civilly, they will be treated that way as well. Don't worry so much about safety as much as whether you can deal with as much responsibility as it entails. You have to protect these rapists and murderers just like you protect innocent civilians. You are in charge of their care, and you have to deal with them on a very personal basis. They will know your name and whatever else they can find out about you.
I recommend it though. I can't see myself doing anything else.
