Is working as a gas station attendant embarrasing?
Asked by Captain Snuggles
Here's the deal. My friend graduated from college about a year ago. He's been working as a gas station attendant for about 5 years (4 during college, 1 after graduation)
What was the point of going to college if he was going to keep working as a gas station attendant? I think he fears change, and also fears that since he has no workplace skills, he wont get paid as much in the corporate world. Thoughts?

If your friend is using the opportunity to gather skills to potentially open his own gas station or to manage this one, then fine.
If not, then he should consider searching for another job. Not every job needs exactly relevant work experience. I work at a financial services firm in NY, and we hire people with lots of backgrounds, including military, engineers, liberal arts, etc.
Your friend should consider his skills at a high level. In addition to an education, he probably has customer service skills, problem solving skills, etc. through his work at the gas station. If he can take these skills up a level and extrapolate examples, he can do well on a job interview in another field.
Give him lots of encouragement!! Offer to proofread his resume. Good luck!!

Or maybe he's comfortable there and just biding his time for the job he wants. I don't know. What did he say when you asked him?

Maybe he's really happy at what he's doing. some people fear change. maybe he didn't like the course he took in college, who knows have you asked him? Sometimes people wpould be more happy working in a low stress friendly low paying job rather than working in high levels of stress and manipulating corporate co-workers and making more money and being miserable.

He is the one that has to live with his choice. If he is happy, then I would suggest not saying anything about it.
I'm actually embarrassed to be doing my job at my age. So I'm looking for a new job. Some people are twice my age doing the same thing and love it. If he is unhappy, or becomes unhappy, he will look for something else.

Having a college degree, but staying at the gas station is embarrassing. Convince him that he could be making more working somewhere else and his life would improve. Just having a graduating college pretty much guarantees more money (depends, but usually you'll earn more).

He maybe timid,or possibly still thinking his options.Or he may be content,we should all be so lucky to have a education, while being content.

Durring school it was okay. After school? If it is a chain of stations and he is in a fast track management program cool.
If he is pummping gas and taking money? His parents need to boot him out, or he needs to quit smoking pot. Both problems lead to a lack of motivation.
If this is more than a "friend" you need to be honest about your feelings. Something like "I work hard, and I expent anyone that is with me to work hard too. If you will not of you can't, then I WILL not be with you." Explain you want a car, a house, and enough money to have kids if you ever want them.
PS... if it is the pot thing, expect him to say he can't and he has tried, watch for real tears, and run if you see them.
