Anyone who has ever worked for or is working for the post office?
Asked by Precious
What's it like working at the post office? I mean, what do you do? Is it awful? Are the people generally nice? What kind of hours do you have?

My parents have worked for the post office for 35+ years. They are now eligible to retire. They make good money. However, every time I wanted to work there, they both told me that I would not like it and not to do it. Granted, they have seniority, and they are good workers so they can kind of do whatever they want at this point, it seems like a normal warehouse type job. Obviously, you would be doing something with mail: filing, sorting, moving, throwing sacks of mail, using the computer to make sure mail is at a specific location. It is not a white collar type job. As another person responded, you would ordinarily be hired on as a "casual". Casuals don't have benefits. They get paid about $12 an hour where I live. You work a normal 8 hour shift, but they do mandatory overtime if there is a lot of mail. If you don't do it. they can just let you go. Some people have been hired on as casuals for as long as my parents have worked there. They do give the post office test periodically, and if you pass that, then you would be hired as a regular. You would get benefits then. You can be hired straight on as a regular if you can find when the test is given and apply for the job in time. When I was growing up, our family wasn't "rich", but I didn't really want for anything. I have my degree and I'm grown now, and I still don't make as much as my parents do. There are definite pros and cons. It kinda depends on what you want if you choose to pursue it.

I would not recommend. First, they make you a casual employee (temp) and it takes too long to get permanent unless you are retired from the military. Second, it is hardwork and some supervisors can be mean. If you're a casual, your 8 hrs. of work can sometimes just be 6 hrs. depending on the workload. You may have to work on holidays too. The benefits are, you have retirement.

I have worked for the post office. In the UK.
They are quite good employers, not all the customers are friendly but you get that with working with the public.
I left due to health but I liked it.

THe work is tedious and hard on your hands. I would much rather work for another federal agency than the PO...also, it's under a separate system than other federal agencies, which is a + in terms of medical benefits but a - in EVERYthing else!
When I worked there, they also had a semi-mandatory overtime thing...
