Career Questions and Answers

Do you have to be good at math to be a bookkeeper or accountant?
Asked by Bottom Contributor
I know the answer may seem obvious, but can you get by these days with leaving most of the calculations to computers? I'm very hard-working and trustworthy, but I'm not great at math. Thanks!

I was an Accounts Receivable officer for a few years, and while yes, you will be using spreadsheets that do the calculations for you, and using an adding machine (gotta have that printout) for any money that may cross your desk, the bottom line is that without good math skills, anything in accounting just isn't for you. Nothing personal; if you said you couldn't write, I'd tell you not to take that job at the newspaper. It's just a matter of skillset. Find what you're good at, and excel at that.
