CAD is the acronym for Computer Aided Design. CAD is used in many different businesses, but generally all are engineering. CAD operators would take engineering drawings, and turn them into 3D CAD structures. I believe there are a number of Tech schools that offer certifications. CAD Operators has replaced the positions of Draft Designers of 20 years ago.

Before computers were invented we had people known as Draughtsmen who used to design and draw components for the engineering industry by means of technical drawing. When computers were introduced to this, Draughtsmen were basically made redundant or had to upgrade their skills to CAD which means Computer Aided Design. Now, the technical drawing is compiled on computer and to be able to programme these drawings, you need to find a college that teaches CAD.

A:
CAD = Computer Aided Design, It consists of drawing Architectural, Buildings, Mechanical and Electrical designs.
Depending on your level of training and knowledge of engineering depends on the type of work you are able to do.
Basic CAD operators copy amendments of drawings and convert them into a digital Format. CAD can be more advanced and can also be drawn in 3D like designing Paperwork and ducts.
Auto-CAD is the main software to be trained in and is fairly cheap and easy to learn. You can do a 10 week City & Guilds award at most colleges. It can also be taken up to degree level.
Some Companies will even train people with no knowlage of autoCAD

Cad (Computer Aided Design) involves the design of products to client specifications.
Before computers this was done on a drawing board, with pen and pencil. But nowadays it is all done on computer.
The main purpose of a proper draughtsman is to draw the product required for manufacturing staff to produce and manufacture what the cliet requires within a given specification.
Almost everything has to be designed by a draughtsman,
eg television remotes. (drawings have to be produced to make the moulds they are formed in)
Houses, (general layouts and electircal routes)
Mechanical ( pipes and valves )
Staircase ( making them fit in between spaces)
I hope this helps.
www.autodesk.com/autocad. ( most common package)
www.solidworks.com (3d draughting program)
Most colleges offer night classes or day courses. and can vary from 10weeks to 2 years. depending on what your after.
You should look into it, its rewarding to look back and sa, i designed that.
