Career Questions and Answers
do you think being an animal trainer is a respectable job?
Asked by teenagerampage
I'm just getting ready to go into college and I decided that I want to study to become an animal trainer. There are many places you can work.. animal shelters, theme parks, movies, zoos...etc. Do you think it's kind of a lame career choice? I know I care too much about what others think, but I just want to make sure I'm not making the wrong career choice.

I actually know an animal trainer who works at the zoo. My family and I went to go see her last year and we all thought the world of her. She did just a great job, and has such a passion for doing it. She deals only with the sea lions, and they do a show at the Zoo, it is SOOOO cute. The sea lion gave her kisses, did the "body wave", jumped through hoops, etc. So she teaches them all of those things, plus maintains their area, feeds them, etc. She has to bulk them up in the winter and slim them down a lot for the summer.
Maybe before doing that, you should go to your local zoo, etc. and see if you could spend a day observing. That's the only thing I would say to you about making such a change to make sure that before you spend the time that you LOVE it.
I'm sure it will confirm your thoughts about your new career choice.
Good Luck!

I think that it's a great decision to go into animal training especially if it'll make you happy. you should do something that you like, and ignore what others think - on my opinion. maybe you should try working or volunteering at zoos or animal shelters over the summer to see if that's really what you wanna do. that's what I did and it helped me make my decision. good luck :)
