Asked by James R
I want to be a salaried technical writer. I do not want to do freelance (except maybe on the side to earn extra money). But I am scared to enter the field because from what I have heard there is a constant fear of job turnover. How can I avoid constant layoffs on the job?

Best Answer:
Get a job in local, state or federal government.

A:
Work for a contract labor outfit or free-lance. And yes, I can confirm that the high turn over rate is real and not rumor.

Give this choice a lot more thought. Add another skill set and certification. It is a tough go at the moment.

Its funny you asked that because I was just wondering why every technical writer at the company I work for gets let go. I'm NOT a technical writer but I end up doing the work that the real technical writer was doing when he/she got canned. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the work isn't steady enough to pay someone full time and they use you until you've completed the project they hired you on for.
