Career Questions and Answers

How can I break into Public Affairs/Relations after working previously as an Accountant?
Asked by litchick1977
I have an Accounting degree and a steady career as a Project Accountant, yet I am not fulfilled in my work. I will soon be graduating with an English degree and would like to break into Public Affairs. I am having difficulty breaking into PR even though I have 10+ years of professional accounting experience. Current professional responses please. Thanks.

How did you become an accountant if your major is English? PR is very different from accounting. Get some PR experience. You can do that by volunteering at your local library, your school newspaper, the Red Cross, etc., etc. Perhaps you could even volunteer to work on PR projects with your current employer. Before you graduate with the English degree, take some public relations/marketing classes. Just a thought.
