Is it worth becoming a heavy equipment operator?? For a living?

Awesome! Any trades are great because they are needed everywhere. heavy equipment operator, electrician, plumber, mechanic, all great choices.

Yes!! These people can get paid mega bucks depending on where they work and guess what - trade school is cheaper than a university and employers will often pay for it. Go for it!!!1

Most jobs on heavy equipment are very hard to get because they pay so well. In union strong states you must get into the union to find a job. Look into Operating Engineers apprenticeship maybe. As far as just starting out. It seems hi-lo drivers make ok money and are in demand.
