Company owned laptop--can they read my Yahoo emails?
Asked by starbrite74♥♥
New job will have me traveling with a company owned laptop. In my downtime I plan on playing around on 360, Y/A and on Yahoo email. Will they be able to access all of that? I don't want to travel with two laptops. :-(
Ha ha ha! I'm not sending or viewing porn. That's not the case. I just email a lot of old friends and we are pretty silly. I just woudn't want my employer seeing my 360 pages and Answers and stuff.

Yes. It is their property.

Of course they will, it's a feature to access lost files, but also useful for police tracking down potential sex offenders.

Regardless of whether you approve, they have every right to anything that is on the computer, and knowing what you use it for.

If they can hack your account yes. Other than that, Its not possible to access any of that. They would have to actually get passed your actual YAHOO! account.

A:
No, they will not, because they cannot track what you do, only where you go.

Yes they can, but the question is, will they bother to do so? Unless they suspect you of theft or something, most IT departments have bigger fish to fry.

A:
no...unless they can "bootlog" the password you enter in through the computer...however if they did that it would be illegal for them to access your account without your consent
thats why most companies REQUIRE you to use their own email account which then, would make it legal for them to read...due to the fact that they cannot read your own

You should consider anything you do using company property to be open to their scrutiny. They probably wouldn't be able to get into your personal accounts per se if you kept your history, etc. cleared, but you should be aware that they are within their rights to come looking. You don't have to carry another computer, just be aware of the possibility. But a laptop is a pretty small thing, if you think you may want to download anything or save anything permanently, I would recommend bringing your own, if only to preserve your privacy.

They can access your emails only if you go through a company server, however, your laptop is their property so they can scan your hard drive anytime they want to. This is done when you are at a meeting and they request all laptops for an upgrade. My advice is to be very careful what you maintain on your company laptop.

don't take any chances. i had a boss that was so mean once that she did this. she got a print out of all the phone calls people were making from the office phone. not to see if long distance calls were being made but to see who was on the phone during "company time". i was pissed as hell as she came to me and held it in my face and said "I see ALOT of calls to this one number" as if it was me (it was) but how did she know that? There were about 30 people in our department. i was furious. to be spyed upon like that. the big buzz is NEVER to do anything you wouldn't want broadcast over the workplace intercom on any computer at work or any computer that you take home with you. many workplaces have software in place to determine who is using the PC during work time and they can actually see what sites you are on. and email too. carry 2 laptops. no way do you want to get into your personal stuff with a work computer. you could however have it torn apart at your expense at a computer store and have them put in some new parts and stuff so that your stuff can't be tracked back to the workplace. then when you left the job you would want to get a new motherboard (not sure if this applies with a laptop) so they couldn't pry into what you have been up to. i wouldn't even go there. i know you don't mean you are going to do anything bad or illegal but they are like little spies nowadays. just be careful for your own sake.

You will not believe the extent of what companies do to keep their employees from distractions at work. Your answer is possibly yes. I know Outlook Email for your company, they can read all of them. Your company uses a SMTP protocol for transmitting and receiving email and that will be on a server somewhere where things get reported and logged.
What would get you is something called a keylogger. 60% of Fortune 500 companies and a lot of small businesses are using these to see what web sites you visit, what you say in your emails even if on yahoo or hotmail, etc... This is one way new technology can bite you you back.
Especially if they have given you a company owned labtop, they probably have a way of getting any information they want. As long as you keep it to a minimum and I mean a small minimum you shouldn't be in any trouble. Check out the following web sites to read some more about keyloggers.
Glad to be of assistance.

Many companies install keylogger programs on their computers to see exactly what you are doing while on their system.
And if you have to access the internet through the company's internet then it is really easy to do so.
The people who are telling you that they "can't" are dead wrong. The technology to track every single key you type has existed for over 10 years and many companies have it.
Can you make friends with IT guys and find out what they do look at and what they do track?

they can only check your mails if its a company email account. not a personal. Be sure not to keep the pass words in the computer, do check the box " keep me signed in for two weeks" , And always remembers to sign out.
They can have rules about you using there computer, I would check first. Be sure to use some kind of anti-virus, and not to download anything. You would hate to have to replace there laptop because of something someone sent you.

Anything on the hard drive...anything in the history (not cleared) anything in the recycle bin, anything in favourites..plus inbox, sent items etc will be accessible.

A:
I don't believe that they will be able to read your e-mails however if you don't try and keep your History 'cleaned up', the next time that they get a hold of the laptop they will be able to see that you were goofing around on it. Maybe ask your boss or superiors what is okay and not okay to do on this new laptop of yours.
Are these things really worth losing your new job over? Doesn't sound like it.

A:
No!
It is not physically possible for them to have access to your accounts, unless they know what your password is.
It is possible for them to track what sites you've been on though. But, if you're getting your work done, they're not even going to bother looking.
The other thing is that if you are travelling, it is reasonable for them to expect that you will be using the laptop for at least some degree of personal use.
