Career Questions and Answers

I need career advice! What can I find with less than 3 years experience?
Asked by Misty W
I graduated college almost 3 years ago and have tried retail management and am now an assistant to a project manager at a consulting firm (I do admin work) I don't know what direction I want to go from here. I enjoy the corporate world but I have no idea what industry to try. My degree was in marketing but every job that I come across for marketing are those with all commission, no salary and no benefits. I would be willing to try anything from sales to HR to recruiting. I just need a push in the right direction! I am looking for an industry that is challenging, requires hard work and motivation, and ideally requires travel. It scares me that I have no distinct career path but I am striving to find one every day. Any suggestions or words of wisdom would be wonderful!

in this thinning economy, you'd be lucky to find any job

It sounds like that when you are looking in marketing, you aren't finding jobs that refer to business marketing. You are looking more at sales. The problem is that you don't have experience in HR or recruiting. It sounds easy, be really it's not. I think you need to focus on your priorities on what you KNOW how to do. What can you do better than anyone? What can you take to a business and WOW them? Keep looking. If you are working full time, you should ALWAYS be able to find a job that has a salary AND benefits. Stay away from get rich quick schemes. Write down a list of your best qualities as an employee and make another list of what you know how to do. Next, update your resume. Re-do it. Make it look AMAZING. Drop the objective. Next, rewrite your cover letter. WOW them. As a marketing major you know how to write. SHOW THEM! Next, network. You have connections so use them. Use whatever you can -- the newspaper, the internet, business websites, etc. Start filling out applications and don't stop. REMEMBER TO PERSONALIZE EACH COVER LETTER. Better yet, don't stop. Don't settle. Also realize that you may not get to travel now. That's fine. There will be a time for that. What is more important -- a salaried position or traveling?

You know, I went to school for something unrelated but ended up in banking! It has sales, sales goals, clients, a huge array of products AND continuing ed classes (during THEIR hours) that can shoot you into different career paths (investments, HR, training, business banking, etc) the longer you stay and get under your belt. The best thing...SALARY, BENEFITS, and 401K!

Identify the careers that provide the travel and demand the hard work and motivation that you seek. Whatever career you eventually embark upon will require the qualities (hardwork, motivation, challenging) to be "already" within you. Simply, self employment will demand all these and your returns will be directly proportional. Your question does not reveal your salary expectations, but I suspect you want the best return for your services and college papers possible; a calculated easy street. Review your abilities and personal traits and fit those into the appropriate career path. If the face fits, say into Media, Politics then you'll be fine.

Ok here you go, I am going to save you twenty years of trading time for money, living paycheck to paycheck and getting nowhere at a JOB which stands for JUST OVER BROKE. If you are open minded and will think out of the box for about 30 minutes this could change your life forever as it has for my family and I. My 20 year old son just dropped out of college to do it and my 26 year old son just quit his job of 6 years to do it. My wife and I started in Sept. 07 and it's by far the best business decision I have ever made since graduating college in 1976.
