How to get around my lack of supervisor experience?
Asked by Laura3264
I am wanting to apply for the position of lead teller at a bank. I meet all the criteria for the position such as heavy customer service experience, high energy, and banking experience, but I have VERY, and I do mean very, little experience as being a supervisor to anyone. Is there anyway I could overshadow this in an interview? Has anyone ever gotten around this problem? I feel it is a job I would be wonderful at if I would be able to get training for it. What could I do?

I suggest that you take some management courses at your own expense and on your own time. You can even do it over the internet. This will show to your employer your interest and willingness to learn. I've seen one person get a higher management position this way. Although she didn't just take a few courses. She got a masters degree in management on her own. But even taking a few courses is a lot better than nothing .

Read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. You should be fine from there until you get on the job if hired. Your inexperience will definitely show quickly.

Supervisory skill isn't something you train for, per se, it's more about the working knowledge of the bank. The ins & outs, the rules, the laws, what do you do sort of thing, common sense. Customer relations as well as interacting with sub-ordinates and bosses. How quickly and how well you think on your feet. How you make others feel, how you come across to others. How effective are you explaining or resolving issues? Those are natural leadership skills. Management classes help, but people skills is key. A supervisor is someone between a rock and a hard place. Good luck.

A:
Supervisor is a noun and supervise is a verb. If you are operating as a stand alone teller and only go to your supervisor on proprietary procedures, you have already reached the next level. You may want to keep a pocket note pad of these circumstances. In the front keep a list of your referrals which are exceptions to normal work flow. In the back note how each issue brought to you was resolved. Did you do it yourself or help the other person to better understand their role? Eliminate use of the word "I" and constantly ask yourself: "Am I acting like a boss or a supervisor?" Don't spend money. Just extend yourself. Good Luck.
