What are the safety equipment as required in the construction industry in the UK?
Asked by Otero
I mean, the compulsory requirements. Safety toe? Helmet? Safety Vest? or are some of these items just optional?

Best Answer:
On all building sites hard hats and steel toe caps are compulsory. For some jobs face masks , goggles and protective gloves are also compulsory - e.g when using an angle grinder/chain saw . If the work is on a site with a lot of moving traffic then a high visibility jacket may also be required.

A:
minimum requirement varies from site to site, but as a general guide in your p.e.p.(personal protective equipment), you should have safety boots(steel toe cap),hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, and personal first aid kit.mine has plasters, burn cream and eyewash, bandages and safety pins.as i said, it varies from site to site. to get the exact requirement for where you are, check out your local governments health and safety policy.you can find this at www.govt.com.hope this helps.

Hi there. I am the Director of Tri-Star Construction based in Manchester. The law dictates an employer must provide all personal protective equipment as is reasonably practicable. This leavs a massive loophole in the law. An employer can claim it is not reasonable or practicable to provide every employee with a lanyard to prevent falls or full breathing aparatus to brevent inhalation of dust. However an employer would not be able to claim it was unreasonable or inpractical to provide all his employees with dust masks and scaffold railing. As a bare minium all contruction employees are required to wear Steal Toe Caped Boots, and a Hard hat. for certain tasks Eye Protection, Ear Defenders and Dust Masks and required. In any case the law states All PPE must be made readily available to employees at the Employers Expense.

PPE( personal protection equipment) hard hat steel toe cap boots and hi viz vest are required just to enter the site. there is no option on these requirments as they are law. for use of power tools such as stihl saws the construction firm is by law is meant to have on site dust masks and safety glasses. all power tools should have a working noise limit tag, for heavy power tools such as kango hammers and hydraulic breakers every 15 minutes of use a 5 minute break is required. toilets and clean washing facilities are required by law so is a clean and safe eating environment. so the minimum requirment for you is to turn up on site get inducted and either have your own or be supplied PPE. most sites do not supply boots if you have no boots all site managers and foremen would send you home if you have no boots but they will supply you the vest and hard hat. just make sure you turn up for work with steel toe cap boots.

While there are a min (UK) requirenment for PPS by law - many construction firms are attempting to change the way construction works. In the UK it is Risk assessment that determines what PPE is required but companies and insist that MORE is required by policy. Several of the big contractors now insist on: boots, hat, hivi, goggles and gloves at all times on site irrespective of job. so it all depends....
