IT is a new term and field compared to engineering which has been around for a while.
IT usually refers to technical jobs that deal with designing, implementing, managing or supporting a computer network, database or information system.
Basically, if you are developing or supporting anything (hardware or software) that is part of a computer network or information system, then you can be referred to as an IT professional.
Engineering is a much broader field that refers to anyone with an engineering degree that develops a product or application.
For example, engineers can develop PC applications or network communication hardware and be called IT professionals.
However, engineers can also develop engine control systems for cars which would not be considered IT.
One can also be an IT professional without being an engineer. Many people are capable of setting up and maintaining a computer network at a company without having engineering knowledge.

At the end of the its all about getting that pay check. Its not about your educational qualification its about what you can do that is gona get you a job. I see mechanical , electrical even civil engineers working in IT field. It all depends on your outlook. You have to think beyond what you have in hand.
