I work at a motel, is it legal for the boss/owner to?
Asked by Jessica
make the employess sort of like his servants?
He made one desk clerk fold his laundry, had another do his dishes and had the maintenance man bring him coffee and milk to his room.
He is also in the process of taking out four of our rooms (which are already reserved for a couple of events later this year) and making them into an apartment and he now wants to take our bathroom away to make an office for himself. He just bought this place in October.
Wow, some of y'all are taking this question a little too seriously. I just was curious if these things were ok for an owner to have people do, I am only 18 years old ok? I still have a lot of learning to do. Jeesh.

i believe the employees have some rights, but unless the boss was making conditions unbearable to the point that working became a danger or health risk, im afraid, being the boss and all he'd most likely get away with it. If he were unreasonable if there were some serious reason why u couldnt do what he asked then you also may have a leg to stand on.
then again, you could always spread the word of his nasty little habits and if you all ever quit from being fed up with crap then his rep will be ruined and he will be kicking himself for being such a bastard XD

Unless you are in a union and have specific job duties that he contractually agreed to, yes it is legal. As long as he is not asking you to break the law.
Your only real option would be to find another job. Sorry.

About the bathroom yes its legal. About making people do things that are NOT in their job description well he can get away with it unless someone speaks up and says NO I wont do it.If he tries to fire you for refusing you can file a wrongful termination suit against him.Tell him to show where in the job description it is required for you to do these things and if he wants you to do them then he'll need to pay you extra for it.

Good lesson here. Get a new job. Don't complain or sit around with the other employees and share stories on how odd the manager is and that he asked someone to trim his nose hair.
Just get out.
Sure, what this guy is doing is not fair or normal business practice, but I do find it interesting how a lot of people on this site (guessing younger people) are asking about legal actions, like for some reason they think anything unfair is illegal.
Sorry to digress, but I think it is something for you to think about, it will help you in the long run.

I grew up in the country. I was hired by a farmer to work. I was being paid to work. I worked, Digging trenches, shoveling manure, milking cows, cutting trees, splitting firewood, feeding cows... Whatever needed to be done.
I worked at a car dealer. I cleaned cars, painted the building, put storm windows on the owners apartments, swept the floor.
If I hire you to work, you work. If you don't work I send you home and hire someone that will work. You think I am going to pay you to sit around doing nothing? You want a job, then work. You can quit. find a job to your liking or start your own business.
It is my building and business. If I think I can make enough to survive by removing some of the rooms from service I can do it. If I have customers booked, I can make other arrangements or I will lose business.
Too many people think they should control the one that is smart enough to provide them with a job. You need a job shoveling manure in a chicken barn, or working in a leather tannery where the fresh hides come in. You would learn to appreciate fetching a glass of milk.

Unless you have a contract this is all legal. You work for him don't you? If he is paying you and he is not asking you to break the law its all legal. If you don't like your duties quit.

Was this mentioned in the interview as duties included for the job? If not sounds like this guy needs his mom back to take care of him! Give him an inch and he takes a mile.....

Yes, it's legal. As long as you make at least minimum wage he can require you do many of her personal errands.
Seems like a creepy boss, but not an illegal one.
