I got a BS degree in accounting. Should I settle for an accounting clerk job?
Asked by luv2spwg
The reason is I have no experience. So should I settle for an accounting clerk job for now? Or should I decline the offer and aim higher?

Could you get a job with an accounting firm? Broaden your horizons. Take whatever job you can for now but have a long term goal in mind. Maybe take a professional exam like the CPA or CFA. Go abroad and teach English and learn a foreign language after a year. Join the Peace Corps. Learning doesn't have to stop. Doing stuff like this could set you apart. You could even go back to school and be a doctor. You're better off than most people. I've got an econ degree and no experience and I'm not getting job offers but I'm not upset. I'll just get a job and save money and then go around the world and have some cool experiences.

If you have no experience, you really can't aim higher.

In these days and times, it's really hard to find decent work. Considering that you have no experience I would definitely say that you shouldn't pass up this opportunity, not unless there are other more appealing job prospects in line that are definite possibilities. I don't know of many places that are taking the time to train individuals for upper level jobs without experience. There's certainly nothing wrong with aiming higher and I believe that once you gain some experience and "prove" your worth that you'll be able to negotiate your way to a higher position. Even if it's not with the same company.

It might be ok to start out if you don't have any experience, but don't stop there. Move on up the ladder with your degree because you paid for it and you deserve it. Good Luck....

It depends on the opportunities for growth and development in the company. If it is possible to progress fairly rapidly from this position within the company then it is a good starting point. You need to find out career paths within the company. You could also consider taking a temporary or contract position as an accounting clerk, that way you are getting the experience and are able to openly investigate other opportunities at the same time. You can search for short-term contract work in this field with a temporary recuitment company or outsource specialists.
