is there a standard amount of hours that is considered full or part time?
Asked by macgrl80
at my current job we work 37.5 hours and they consider that part time. for the past month or so they are requiring that we work 40 hours but our medical benefits are only limited for part time (starbridge/cigna?) at my last job part time was at least 30-34 hours i think and full time was 37.5 hours. i am just confused about how one company can have it be full time and one can have it part time.

Check with your state's department of labor; some states set a standard such as "35 hrs or more equals full-time." States will have requirements for minimum wages, break/lunch times, benefits, and other conditions of employment, which may exceed or be more stringent than federal regulations. Federal and state regulations are supposed to posted in the workplace. If not there, talk to your state's labor department! Once federal & state labor laws are met, the rest is up to the employer. So it is very common for different employers to do a lot of things differently!

Legally ( For most jobs IE nursing is different) full time is 40 hour a week, some companies may lower the required hours if they wish but they can not make it more.

Some companies consider 32 hours full time for benefits etc. Others consider 40 hours full time. It just depends on their policy I guess. Sorry I don't have more info for you!

Generally a company should give you 40 hours if you work full time, and part time is 32 hours or less. Over 32 could be considered full time, but they would be cheating you by not giving you your full 40 hours.
