Career Questions and Answers
Which has better future prospects?
Asked by ITMatt
I'm currently a Systems Engineer with 5 years experience working for a major bank. I am 22 with an Advanced Apprenticeship, Advanced Diploma and several IT certs.
Which route would have the best long-term prospects:
1) Stick as a Sys Eng and do a IT related degree
2) Change to Software Development and do a Comp Sci degree
3) Or, career change to construction i.e. Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor or Building Services, and do a Construction related degree
Either option, I would probably finish my degree around 26 doing it part-time.

Well this clearly depends on geographical needs dude. Different countries have different requirements. It clearly depends on which country you would like to settle in.
for eg:
If you wanna settle in US itself, you could take option 1. that is take a related degree
If you are looking to ponder somewhere in the gulf, then you have to change your career to construction and do a construction related degree, coz that has more scope here in the gulf rather than IT. Not that IT has no scope, but compared to construction its low,
Then if you are looking towards east or european countries then i would suggest option 2. The trend is high there now, and its easy as ordering fast food to get a job there with software development
all the best man

The job with the best prospects is an undertaker, second best hair dresser, third best systems engineer. Go for the one that you like best.

You are currently in Software or Hardware. Sys Engineer you say - then again to your qn it will be better to stick to what you know and done since you can add this as an experience. If you like software side move to do some softwares related to your exp like for eg if you are a networking guy you could do CCNA, CCNP or even CCIE and get a well paid job.
career change after spending 4 yrs of study and now that you are 22 puts you back in square one. you will have to start from scratch again. at least with the software you have 5 yrs experience now.
hope this helps.
