Would a guy in his 40's have trouble getting hired as an administrative assistant?
Asked by Gordon S
I am between jobs and having trouble getting hired in my profession (paralegal). I am a guy, in my late 40's and have a good grasp of various computer programs like Word, Excel, Access and Outlook Express. Would it be difficult for me to get work through a temp agency as an administrative assistant? I haven't been able to get jobs through legal recruitment agencies for legal temp work.

I would recommend calling up some local temp agencies in your area. Then set up an appt. You usually need to take in your resume, showing details of background and experience. They will probably give you some tests to figure out your typing speed, accuracy, etc. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? Good luck, Ginger

I don't see why not. If you have a good knowledge of those computer programs and are familiar with an office environment then you should have no problem.

Yes, look in the yellow pages for admin temp agencies. Do you have a degree in paralegal studies? If I were you I would work as temp in admin assist and in the meantime get your degree in paralegal studies and then apply for paralegal jobs. Good luck!

I would think a temp agency would be the best way to go. That way you are placed temporarily in a position and then the employer gets to see that you can do the job regardless of being a man or woman. Good Luck!

I am going through the same thing. It seems that most employers I contact about becoming an Administrative Assistant, prefer women. All the people at my corporate office here, that are A.A's are women.

there are a few guys in large companies that work as admin assts and they are very good. i think that your difficulty here will be selling yourself as an admin , fixing your resume to reflect that skill set. you do not want to be seen as a paralegal that can't gain employment becuase they won't want to hire someone who will leave when a better paralegal position opens up. we had a paralegal position and many lawyers applied for it, we would not hire an attorney as a paralegal (even though they had great experience of course) because we viewed them as unstable, not going to stay a long time. market yourself correctly and you should have no trouble.
