Career Questions and Answers
Biology or Clinical Laboratory Technology?
Asked by Becka
I am really interested in Microbiology. What major would be better? Can you work in a health care setting with a degree in Biology? Is there an extra exam you have to take to get a license? With a biology degree do you get most of your experience in school, or with an internship or on your first job? Would I be adequately prepared for a job as a microbiologist with a bachelor’s degree in biology or would the clinical lab degree be better? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am a Medical Technologist, with a BS in biology there is really not any job you can get. There are many people out there with that degree who planned to go to med school or elsewhere and are unemployed. To work as a microbiologist you will either have to work as a med tech (which you can do with a BS) or get a PHD in Microbiology. You can't really get a job outside of the med tech field in microbiology without an advanced degree.

You will have to go into the Medical Technology field. It would take longer if you were to get a biology degree first because you would still have to go to a Medical Technologist school. The easier route would be make your major in Medical Technology....BSMT.
Yes there are national boards to take to become a Technologist just like a R.N.
