Basically being told I'm stupid?
Asked by B. B.
I work in an office with all guys and they act like if I don't know something, I'm stupid or wrong for not knowing. Just today, I was told to lie and say the manager that quit back in 2006 still worked for us even though he doesn't. I'm used to saying that he doesn't work for us and I tell them our new GM's name. Well, I forgot that they told me to take a message and tell them that he'd call back because 1) its a lie. 2) I'm already busy enough much less to remember the lie and 3) I already have to screen the calls of every person that calls this place because my bosses are some criminal scheming lying mo fos. Then I get told that its really not that difficult and they can't believe that I couldn't remember. ARRRGGGHHHH! Advice, please. Wow, thanks to everyone. I am already looking for another job (I'm in nursing school) so I think I'll just keep in mind that this is temporary and not let it bother me too much! Thanks again.

If they are "criminal scheming lying mo fos" why are you working there? Get the hell out of that place quickly and don't look back! If they go down, remember who lied to whomever for them... YOU. Don't allow yourself to sucked any further in. Don't worry about them treating you like you are stupid - worry about them getting you into trouble!!!

A:
I'd go to HR about the whole lying thing.

i would say either find a new job, or tell them in very strict terms... My job is to answer the phone and route calls, not to lie to our customers about who works here and who does not. I have many other tasks I do throughout the day, if you have any concerns over how I am handeling the calls perhaps you should bring this up with the GM. thank you for your understanding.

Don't ever let someone make you feel like you are stupid. If you feel that doing something is wrong then tell them. If they can't respect you for doing the right thing than they don't deserve you!!

Yeah...why would you want to have a job where you are required to lie. But, if you can't find a new job then HR might be your best bet. Though, I would be prepared that if you do go to HR that those guys you work with might use that against you.

It wasn't that difficult, but you're not stupid. You need to sharpen your skills and develop thicker skin. This is business, not personal, so please don't think with your emotions. They told you to do something, you did it incorrectly and now you are being criticized (and rightly so). Suck it up and do better next time. *EDIT* This isn't an issue of lying, you agreed to lie and then messed it up, now you're backtracking. A certain amount of lying is prevalent in every business. All this advice to quit your job is counter-productive. The point is to become a stronger candidate, to become in the know and to effectively integrate yourself in your company's politics. You won't get anywhere by throwing your hands up and quitting every time you feel offended. That's not how the boys play, why should you?

this is clearly unfair and you're beeing belitled for being a woman and brighter than them. You should consider talking to your superiors about this. But there is no point beeing unhappy... maybe getting a new job someplace else is the best answer. Hope that helped! Good luck!

How important is this job to you? It sounds like your co-workers have a lot of growing up to do. Maybe you should start looking around for something else, where you will be respected for the job you do & the person you are. Good Luck Phyllis G.

Go to HR. If these guys are working government programs or selling to a government agency, they are in big trouble. Lying isn't good in any business situation, and frankly, you are putting yourself at risk, especially if there is some sort of lawsuit down the line, and you get called to the stand...and admit you knowingly lied about this issue. It may be improbable, but keep in mind, if you knowingly lie about something that ends up in a criminal court, you can be held liable. So...I'd say, tell your work mates that you don't plan on lying in the future. And, again, get with HR. If they are smart, they will realize that this is risky behavior to ask...and that they are dangerously close to harrassment with you.

You know what to do - QUIT. You are not capable of doing this job because you are too honest. Try to find another job before you quit (it's quite all right to lie to these people about the reason for your absences while you interview). If you find yourself out of work, don't bad-mouth them because your potential new employer will think you might be a whiner.

First of all to demoralize you and your work is discrimination and is complainable to OSHA. Second, the better business bureau would be happy to hear about what is going on in the office and you can report things annonimously. Third, you should respect yourself and your knowledge of your job enough to not allow your boss' to step all over you. If you don't want to lie about something, voice your opinion and don't do it. If they fire you for it you have everything you need to sue their asses. Fourth, document everything that happens in the office to back up your claims if you need them in the future. You will have more evidence in your corner if and when it happens. It sucks that employees have to protect themselves from their employers but thats how it is and not enough people protect themselves and lose out in the end. Don't let yourself be one of those people.

First: DONT LIE for anyone! Remember the whole Enron scandal. In the end, it turned out to be every man for himself. They will turn on you and leave you holding the bag. Don't do it. Stand up for yourself. If your job doesnt seem worth it, get a better one.

I know how you feel, I have the same situation. I too work in a predominately male office, and believe it can totally SUCK!! I am often treated like the dumb girl, I know I am not dumb but it sucks to be treated like you are. I would go to work everyday knowing that you are a smart girl, you don;t lie and you don't cheat. The guys treat you like that because you let them. Tell each and everyone that you don't appreciate them treating you like that... stand up for yourself girl. Those guys probably have never had a girl tell them like it is, they may even respect you for it! Hang in there and good luck sweetie!

First off, calm down. Relax because these jackasses couldn't get their heads out of their butts long enough to know that its THEIR problem, not yours. I mean, you were just doing your job. You shouldn't be the one to take the blame if someone screws up or , in this case does something illegitimate. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. I was in the exact same position you were, i.e. taking calls, being personal lacky, etc. Until I finally got so fed up with it, I just called more and more sick days. While I was out "sick", I was on a major job hunt. I found a better paying and more ethical business environment with my next job, so that worked out. However, we both know that doing "favors", lying, cheating, and stealing is a common business practice. The only thing is to not get caught. What you should do is just keep your head down, fulfill your duties, and try not to screw up again for awhile. Just chill-ax, smoke a bowl, and get some "me" time.

This may seem like a broken record but, get a new job. Nothing good will come of this and if you try to go along with it for the sake of having an income then it'll come back to bite you in the butt. Not to mention that over time working conditions like this can seriously affect your mental health. Get a new job, for your mental health, for your dignity, for you.

Saying something and confronting your boss is the best situation you could hope for, but this is the real world and he could make your life very hard at work or fire you for some false reason. So, if I were you I would go to HR or go ABove his head to the Regional....depends how things work at your company. Go to the person that would solve the problem with out you being retaliated against. The others are right though that you really do need to find another job. Sounds like there is a major conflict within the ethics of you and your boss. If the problem gets bad enough you do have the option of going to the Department of Labor but obviously try and go other avenues first. When it gets that bad, it is a real nightmare! The fact that the others / boss are putting you down, that is a real sign that you need to seriously spend quality time looking for a new position somewhere. GLuck to ya!

For the next few weeks, secretly document all the things they ask you to do that are beyond your job description, as well as the lying and call screening, and any other ways they are disrespectful toward you. Keep your log to yourself and have a backup too. Try to line up another job at the same time. When you're ready to quit, tell them why you're quitting, and if they give you any trouble, you have your documentation to fall back on to prove why the work situation is intolerable. If you can't get another job, and you just can't take it anymore, your documentation can be used to help you get unemployment benefits. Without the documentation, unemployment wouldn't apply if you just quit your job. If the situation ever goes to court, your documentation may entitle you to various settlement options. good luck

Yah good plan try not to let it bother you too much. Youre not stupid. Those guys are @-holes. If you were stupid they wouldnt have kept you around unless they are stupid. When you do find another job make sure that you leave them with something that is totally screwed up and will make life difficult though. And if they are really criminal be sure and report them.

A:
Don't forget on your last day to check in with HR and let the most senior person there (or the bosses themselves) know that you're going to report the company to the authorities and sue them for creating a hostile work environment. Even if you don't follow through, it should give them something to think about. Meantime, write down everything you learn about the company that would work against them with the authorities. Otherwise, it's your word against theirs. Don't get caught taking notes or poking into confidential files, however.

Yep! I've been there. Screening calls for co-workers sucks. If customers keep calling they think you're not delivering the messages and give you a good yelling at. It sounds like the stress in your office if caused by unethical people asking you to do bad things. If you can, start looking for another job. By all means, if they're asking you to do something illegal--get out of there!!
