What time would a head waiter get off if the restaurant closes at 11pm?
Asked by AAD
I have friend who works in a restaurant as head waiter, he seems to get off unusually late. I have never worked in a restaurant. Around what time would a head waiter get off if the restaurant closes at 11 pm? How many hours after close would a head waiter normally remain to close up shop?

I'm a head waitress at a restaurant that closes at 11:00pm. I usually get off between 12:30-1:00, but sometimes as late as 2:00am. We have to wait for all the guests to leave first, that's the first obstacle, especially when they come in right before closing and want to take their time and hang out. then we have to wait till all the servers finish up their sidework, and check to make sure it's done properly. In some cases there's paperwork as well.

After the las t customer leaves, the place is cleaned up and set up for the next day. Maybe 12:30-1:00 a.m.

About 2 am. They have to manage the other waiters to clean up for the night, then prep for the next night.
The restaurant business is very very tough. An owner of a restaurant would easily put weight of an experienced dishwasher over a so-so prep chef. Why - there's a limited number of plates and the customers at 8 pm are eating off the same plates from the 6 pm crowd.
Understanding organization and utilizing experience is key to the restaurant business. The head waiter needs to manage his staff well and understand where the deficiencies are. The utensils don't wrap themselves in the napkins. Trust me, given any chance to perform a shoddy job, a waiter under the head waiter will do that and hurt everyone.

If the restaurant closes at 11, the last customers will finish around 12, then there's cleaning and set up, which can take an hour or more, depending on the size of the restaurant. since so many restaurants are trimming staff, "sidework" is often taking more time.

Ide say they would probbably leave anyware from 1 to eaven up to 3 houres especially if thair in charge after closing depending on how buissy they wer that day In my opinionEvery place is different but I would say when all of ure or the work is done. Some places make everyone leave at the same time for security reasons. So they would have to wait.Alot of places do prep work the night before. Then thairs always clean up. The buissier the day the more work thair is to do. So on buissier day's thell have to stay later. Ive worked in resturants & my mother was A waitress for years. God bless her. It's hard work. Very hard. It takes awile to get use to it. Harder than U mite think. I remember as A child my mother would go straight to the couch when she got home & wouldnt move again untill she had to go to work the next day.Not eaven to go to the bed. So if I can't leave at least A five dollar tip at A place I won't eaven go. No matter what I order. So if someone is A head waiter thair responsible for everyone & everything & is ushally the last to leave.Has the most stess to So if ure conserned about this person the later they leave work the harder they worked & the less they wan't any grief. So I say God bless them because they earn every cent of thair money. Cut them some slack they work very very hard. Im A mechanic now & would choose 10 hours in the garage over 4 working in the resturant wich I have any day.Eaven if I got paid the same but that's because I enjoy what I do. If this person enjoys being A head waiter then ide call them A masakist!( I hop, Village Inn ). Eaven when I worked at mcdonalds closing we would'nt get out of thair untill 1-2 & a half hours after closing. When A restarant closes the employees work is far from done. Clean up, prep work, cashing out the money , splitting tip's if they do. Most places the waiter's/waitresses tip the bus boys & cooks , doing the books , making shure the money comming in matches the product going out at lease for ure shift ofen last shift get's stuck with thairs plus the daily & if thairs any money missing U don't leave untill U can account for it. If someone else from the other shift made A mistake U have to find it., accounting for waist. Thairs floors to do , dishes clean & stock everything. Cleaning the bathrooms. If U been hard on someone taking to long to get home when thair A closing head waiter U should feel very bad! Well hope ive helped. By the way my dear mother now has A grate job with social security. If ude care to know that is.

I would say anytime up to 2am. It varies every nite depending on when the pigs finish eating. The sooner they get out, the sooner you can start to clean and prep.
