Career Questions and Answers

MARK H
If you have experience working as an HVAC technician...?
Asked by MARK H
Can you answer this question? Is being an HVAC tech the kind of job where you have specific hours? Or are you on-call on a permanent basis? Or is it both? Would it be a good job to have if I need flexibility to go to school for my bachelor's in business? I need decent pay while I'm in school, but I also need something that will allow me to not be on-call so I can attend my classes. How does this work? Does it depend on the employer you work for..? or.. By the way, I live in Las Vegas, so in terms of job security... that's definitely not an issue..

Hvac would not be a good choice for you if you are going to be a full time student. The reason: Hvac is physically demanding - especially for beginners in the trade. Long hours. Inconveniant hours. To answer your question about being on call: Apprentices are not on call. It takes a few years to become a service tech. When I was in college I was a waiter. Although that can take alot out of you too, it seemed to pay the bills pretty well. Hope that helps, Dan
