Admin worker advice?
Asked by sugar
Worked for company for bout 2 years as admin worker. been based at same workstation. I'm the only fulltime person in our office except the manager, other fulltimers changed to parttime re: family commitments. 1 having just had a baby is returning to work shortly parttime. she doesn't want to be at her workstation anymore, she wants to in her words move on to bigger & better things. She sits at reception desk & our manager has promised that as she's done it for 3 yrs now she doesn't have to do it anymore as from June. manager has asked everyone else in our office to do reception & every1 says no as they see it as too much extra work, no extra pay & demotion. Manager said to me-being full time it's likely I'll have to move to the reception desk. I said to her I feel it's unfair making me do this just cos I'm full time and we all feel it would be better shared but our manager doesn't think sharing will work. Do I have any rights to refuse this? Appreciate advice

Your idiot manager feels it won't work because it would bother the other employees, but lets forget about your feelings! I would outright refuse and only take on the additional responsibility for additional money. Not possible? Won't increase your salary? Here is your argument: "I appreciate the fact you are taking the other employees feelings into consideration and as part of your staff my feelings should be taken into consideration as well. I will take on the responsibility as long as it is shared work. If this is not possible then I must ask for a salary increase since you are increasing my work responsibilities. I believe in being a team player, but I will not be taken advantage of. That is only fair."

Either join the 'family commitment' brigade (get pregnant, take maternity leave, get paid on Maternity based on your full-time job, then come back & demand part time) OR it's past time to start looking for another job (where you will be appreciated). In ALL Companies the full-time staff have to work extra hard to support the part-timers .. Getting dumped on by those with 'family commitments' is the way it goes .. those with kids will be off every time the kid gets ill, falls down at school etc. They get first choice of holiday dates and can demand you provide cover at short notice when they decide they want to attend some school event (sports days etc) or the baby-sitter fails to turn up in the morning .. you will just have to lump it. If you are the only full-timer left, plainly the others have seen the light .. it's time to do the same your-self or find an office where the majority of staff are single guys ...
