Career Questions and Answers

Do you have any non manager administrative people over 50 in your office?
Asked by questioner
A relative of mine has a great resume. She knows every Microsoft Package at the expert level and types almost 100 WPM. She has great references and has an incredible work history. You would think she would be the perfect Administrative Assistant. But she can not get a job because she is over 50 years old. The managers want to hire young pretty girls who are 20-35. After that age you are expected to go into management. Do you have any older AA's in your company?

Best Answer:
Yes. Tell her to apply with her local school district. There are many "older" people working there, many whose kids are now grown and gone. Tell her to be persistent and not to give up. School districts are government employers, and they have to watch out very carefully for EOE (equal opportunity employment) guidelines, and age discrimination falls under EOE. However, she will have to compete in a written test, typing test, and/or performance examination against other candidates and emerge at the top of the heap. It's sometimes hard to get into a school district, but it's rewarding. Her years of work experience should help. Good luck.

I haven't been able to find any company who will hire a person over 45 or so. Been there, done that. Nobody wants to hire their mother.
