What is a good employable, art related career?
Asked by sandiegan
I am looking into going to one of The Art Institute schools but I'm having a hard time choosing a career path. I've always been an artistic person and I really like all aspects of it. My parents seem to think that any career which is art related will not provide me with enough money in the future or it will be hard to find a job relating to my degree. I am really leaning towards culinary arts, but I don't know enough about the industry to know how employable I would be and what my future income might be like. Any ideas, suggestions..anything?

I'd ask the AI for a brochure of the different kinds of jobs you can do when you graduate. I'm sure they have different salary ranges for each of their graduates. There are a ton of things you could do, culinary arts might be harder to "make it" in than others, who knows.

Actually the starving artist is a bit of a myth. Usually they are drug taking, social misfits who would rather brood at home in their underwear and a beret while contemplating the nature of the universe before dashing some paint on canvass, then refusing to sell it to the philistines who don't really understand. In fact, artists and musicians make good money. Though it requires a more commercial sense than the cliche artist. Careers in art include working in art galleries (both private and government owned) or working in some semi commercial area. Artists that find a product that people want to by can make a lot of money with commisions (murals and so on). But the "true" artist feels this is a sell out. Art at university tends to be very theoretical, and mostly what you do is learn how to explain your crap than any actual skills. While there are many colleges with a practical focus that will teach you real skills.
