Can I get a job at Barnes & Noble with no prior job experience?
Asked by vannag
I'm currently taking a break from university and need to get a part-time or preferably full-time job. I have absolutely no prior job experience but would KILL to work at B&N. I was a valedictorian in high school and currently attend a very well-known university. Will my lack of experience prevent me from getting a job at B&N (as a bookseller)? Can you suggest any other jobs that I might be able to procure without prior experience? How much does experience matter in retail jobs? Thanks in advance :)

I worked in retail for a while until I decided what I wanted to do with my life. I had only my high school education and that was more than enough. You just have to be flexible and when you apply let them know what you could bring to them. Retail stores get a ton of high school and college applicants, so make yourself stand out. Tell them about your strong desire to work for them and be prepared to tell them why that desire is so strong. Good luck. Any Barnes and Nobles manager would be remiss to not hire you. You sound very responsible.

Based on the information contained in your post I would say you are a great candidate. Employers expect those in college or just out of high school to have limited job experience. That does not automatically disqualify a person. Jobs in retail require self-motivated, team-spirited people who are able to work with all kinds of people. I assume that you want to work at Barnes and Noble because you love books and working with people right? Make sure that you put that on your application or resume. Good luck to you.

well retail jobs are usually easy to get but not good pay. when you go in for your interview go looking very professional. if your turned town try applying for a job at your schools bookstore and get some experience that way.
