with no skills and background in it, a general laborer will make $8-9 an hour average. For some of the technical stuff you want to do - you will need to go to a tech school for construction that trains in equipment operation, skilled labor training, carpentry skills, cement and mortar training, etc. Without training, you will find it difficult to break into skilled construction, could take years, perhaps over a decade, depending how much an employer is willing to allow training on the job and splitting his skilled crews time to train you. A skilled construction laborer can earn $12-18 an hour based on specific position, specialty, and time in field.
My father has been in the Construction Industry going on 40 years, and is VP Special Projects and Government Contracts for an east coast construction company. He likes to be real hands on when overseeing projects, and gets to know the guys from senior management to the unskilled laborers.

Find a field you want to work in and look for a union job. You can find a lot of people that carpool or public transportation. a union job is good if that is what you want. they will train you and you will earn your pay over time.

I'm from NW IN. It's hard to get a job with no experience unless you know someone around here. Try looking into job training programs. Look at companies you want to work for. Do odd jobs for people, so you can network. Don't expect to make much starting off with no experience. Since we don't have public transportation around here you better work on getting transportion, sometimes some companies will provide you with a truck to use for work.
