Is Culinary School The Best Choice For Just Learning to Cook?
Asked by Harrison P
Hey, everyone. I am interested in learning how to cook and I was wondering if a culinary school would be a good choice. I am not trying to become a chef at a restaurant or anything like that. I just want to be able to cook all kinds of great meals for my friends and family. Is there a culinary school that is not too expensive and that is able to work around a job? I would like to work at the same time (not in something related to cooking).

I honestly do not think culinary school would be for you. It is expensive and with you not wanting to do this as your career, it will be too costly and time consuming. Cooking well is like painting or singing well. It's a talent and no amount of schooling can teach you. The best way to learn is to do it. If you know someone who cooks fairly regularly, you could ask them to teach them what they know. Experiment with recipes and make them your own. If you are looking for a good cook book that explains things well, go pick up The Professional Chef. It explains the origin of certain kitchen aspects that you don't normally get from better homes and gardens. It's about $80 but it's the best starter cook book for anyone who really wants to learn how to make great food without the expense and time of a culinary academy. Good Luck!
