Well, it sounds like you dug yourself into a hole and it sort of caved in on ya. I'd say, maybe re-applying back to your old job, and if they are interested in taking you back, GREAT! However, what I would say to the company is 'I am willing to come back on 1 condition, I would like to work any other shift than the one I was previously assigned to.' and explain to them you would like daylight/a different night shift because of the baby on the way, and how you think that this change may help with the new family.
Route B: Are there any other mining companies nearby you that you could possibly apply for? Were you a member of the Union while working in the mining industry? (Such as, my dad works at a plant that manufactures/uses Precious Metals, so he's part of the USW (united steel workers) union.) Maybe see if you can network through your local union to find a job.
Route C: Instead of turning back to the mining community...try construction, landscaping, architecture. Get your resume together. Look at the job networking websites (such as monster.com, careerbuilder.com, etc.) and try other websites like indeed.com (that not only pulls from the networking websites but also your local newspapers and such) And get resume in shape! List all of your skills, your experience, prior responsibilities, EVERYTHING. Hopefully, you'll find something soon. It's stressful enough not having a job, but having a baby on the way, you're pressed for time my friend. Good Luck!!!!!

Would you be willing to move out of your town for a job? There are plenty of jobs for you in towns and cities that are not centered in coal mining. My father once said that this country is great because as long as you speak English and is willing to work, then you'll get a job that'll feed you and your family.
If you're not willing to move, contact a local job placement agency, or apply for unemployment - the government agency that handles unemployment checks will help you find a job.
Hope this helps!
