I agree with part of the previous answers. The answer depends a lot on the kind of business. Inside sales can be sitting an order desk taking phone orders, or calling potential customers looking for orders. You may or may not need to generate your own sales leads. If you do, you usually get paid more because it's a little more difficult. If the business has customers that call in, they get conneted to an Inside sales person, who is generally paid a salary, and perhaps a bonus based on orders/sales made. Some inside sales people are support persons to outside salespeople.
Outside sales folks are out seeing the customers face to face. Their company may have a list of existing customers for them to see and sell to, or they may need to prospect and develop their own new sales. It varies greatly by type of business. Outside salespersons generally earn more than inside people because it is harder and more demanding. Sales can be a well paid position, especially with the right company, and selling products / services that you feel good about. Good luck.
