What nurse assistants do: In today's hospitals and extended care facilities, nurse assistants often have more contact with patients that other health care workers do because they perform almost all of the routine patient care. The nurse assistant is often referred to as the nurse's "eyes and ears" and help nurses by performing many common tasks: -respond to patients’ calls and requests - take patients to operating rooms and to examination rooms - observing and recording patients' conditions: monitoring temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration rates, etc -clean rooms , make beds and serve meals -give massages -walk patients who need assistant -help other medical staff by setting up equipment, storing and moving supplies -observe patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report that information back to the nurse -help patients feel comfortable and try to cheer up patients by being friendly -change dirty sheets and empty bedpans help patients with personal hygiene which include bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming and diapering patients -provide care to patients by helping them get into and out of bed In short, nurse assistants deliver much of the human-touch care that comforts a patient. Nursing assistants employed in nursing homes are called geriatric aides In nursing homes, nurse assistants work with the same patients for many years and often build friendship with these patients.

okay, here in california you can get a job as an NA at any hospital or nursing home. Most places will offer the CNA class where you work, and it takes about 6 weeks to complete. You can also take a class at any community college to get certified in 6 weeks. The job duties are taking vital signs (blood pressure, temp, pulse, ect...... You pass out meals and help patients with their activities of daily living. I have a friend that is a RN and she started as a CNA. She has made it very clear that she prefers to work in a hospital and not a care home, because the patients are more independent and need less personal care.

working as a CNA you are very limited onwhat they need you to do. the task are turn patient every two hours, record in their chart how much they drink and percentage of their meals, give bed baths, change their beds if needed,do the temperature, pulse, resperation, and blood pressure, empty cathetler, assist using bed ban, assist walking to the restroom. these are some of the things that a CNA do in the hospital, you are better off continuing your education as a PCT which allows you to do a little more. you can do some things with the nurses can do.
