Do you drive a school Bus?
Asked by daddynard04
Im hoping to drive school bus for state of VA. Do school bus drivers make a good living, from wages? Or do you think a second job is needed to supplement your income? Also, do they give you work during the summer, or is best to find temp work while school is out on Summer vacation?

Not sure about VA wages but here in Cali, wages aren't bad. Most drivers are part time (5 - 7 hours a day), you figure you drive home to school in the am and then a couple runs home after school is out, depending on if you have separate runs for kinder, regular release, and then after school program. You can make more $$ taking on field trips, but my employer makes sure you understand that school bus driving is a good second income for a family, not a primary income job. Here in Cali, while on summer break drivers file for unemployment. Also here, you have to be careful how many hours you work in a day, not just driving. We are regulated by the state as to how many hours we can be "on duty" and that means any job goes toward that number, not just your driving one. You could take on a summer job if you aren't driving for summer school, but you wouldn't work long, 2.5 months or so, before school starts again.
