I'm starting a position as a cook next week, and am looking into getting a knife set. What's good, but cheap?
Asked by Brian R
I have some decent knives in my kitchen, but most of them are junk. A knife set is something I want to invest in, but not spend an outrageous amount on.

all u need is 3 knives : a chef's knife, a pearing knife, and a bread knife. you can get a set of these made by FURI (a really good knife company out of australia) on Rachael Ray's website for $100 and they'll last you forever

I have been in the food industry my entire adult life, first as a chef, and then in fine food sales. I speak with chefs all day long every day. Having good tools is a must but there is no reason for you to go spending huge amounts of money right now. Go to any large chain store, preferabley cosco or costco depending on where you live. Pick up a mid level set of Henckel Knives. By far they are the best mid to high level knives out there for what you need. Sure there are other brands out there, but trust me, you dont need to be paying $300 per knife right about now. Henckel has great quality and history.

I would start with a set of "tv-knives" - Ginsu, Miracle Blade, etc.
If you're using them for work, they probably won't last "forever" like they're supposed to, but they'll get you buy for a while until you CAN afford a better set.
By no means am I the end all and be all expert about knives, but I believe a decent set can cost anywhere from 150-300 bucks.
