CPA study question. Is an index a requirement of an auditors documentation for an audit?

I am really hoping someone with experience as an auditor or taking/studying for the CPA exam can help.

I'm not sure I understand your question. According to SAS103, audit documentation is required to be sufficient so that an exprienced auditor with no prior knowledge of the engagement would reach the same conclusions. This includes referencing to invoice numbers, including supporting schdules such as amortization schedules, and anything else needed to support the conclusions reached.

An index helps keep order among your working papers. It is not a specific requirement, but without it, it would be impossible for someone with no knowledge of the engagement to follow the audit workpapers per SAS 103.
