How to become a production designer? Need tips for starting?

We're discussing career goals for a class in school. I've long wanted to be a production designer/ conceptual artist for either movies or videogames. However, I went to all these career goal sites, and I can't find any so far that have "production designer" listed. I know there is a lot of competition, that I have to go to an art college apparently, etc, etc. But how exactly does this happen?
