Can you do work experience as a Paramedic?
Asked by mel p
I am 17 years old and live in Queensland, Australia. Currently, I am looking to pursue a career as a Paramedic but would like to do some work experience with paramedics or have a ride along in an ambulance first.
I realise there may be risks involved, but I was wondering if you have ever heard of anyone doing this or whether it is possible?

In today's litigious society, ride-alongs have almost become nonexistent, unfortunately.
In the United States, you can sometime ride along with an ambulance as part of a high school's health career class (where they introduce their students to a wide variety of health related occupations). There are also programs for teenagers that are similar to the Boy/Girl Scouts, called "Explorers". They are attached to a local fire department or police department, and they can sometimes do ride-alongs on the police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances.
I have no idea what's available in Australia, though. Your best bet might be to contact a paramedic supervisor and ask him or her.

Talk to your local EMS Provider Agency. They may have just this type of program in place. You may be required to have current CPR (I was req'd, but I was also doing clinical time for my EMT). Just remember, you don't get anything if you don't ask.
