How dangerous is it being a security guard?
Asked by Doesn't Care
I am thinking of being a security guard and I told my boyfriend about it but he is really scared and worried that something will happen to me, I am trying to calm him but I don't know how since I don't know what it is like being one, I don't have the right things to say. Anyone here who is or was one? What was it like? Did you face dangerous situations? I just need something to reassure my boyfriend that things will be fine.

There's virtually NO risk at all unless you're an ARMED security guard moving large sums of money. If you're the average security guard, you're acting as nothing more than a "paid set of observing eyes" to report crimes, if they happen. So, it's very safe.
I used to be a crime scene detective in South Florida.

Depends on what you are guarding and where.

It really depends on where you are working. Does your city have a high crime rate? Would you be working as security for a high risk company or watching a parking garage and be bored to tears? Just being a security guard doesn't mean you'll be in danger...some do work high risk jobs, some get some action now and then, others rarely have an issue to deal with.

Most guard companies will not put you in a high risk location without some experience and training. Usually these types of assignments are armed or are in high crime areas. I would talk to some guard companies in your area and see what types of positions are available. Mall security might be another position you could consider. Kevin G.
