How much per hour should I ask for on an employment application?
Asked by _suomynona
I'm applying to work at various department stores this summer -- I figure, why not, I'll probably get a discount on clothes -- but I have no idea how much to ask for. I don't want to ask for something insane, but I don't want to ask for too much because I'd like to get hired!
I made $7/hr at my last job, which was like four years ago now.
For the record, it's a part-time sales associate job at Carson Pirie Scott.
Thanks!

Try asking various people at the store what they start out making. I would say try $8.50 the hiring supervisor will either raise or lower it depending on if they want to hire you b/c that doesn't decide if u get hired or not. Also take into account what the job description is, any access chores u will have to do, your experience, and ur states minimum wage. Good Luck!

For part-time in retail (or anywhere, actually), always expect nothing less than minimum wage. You might do best to ask for minimum wage on the job application. But don't be afraid to ask for just a bit more. Most employers are willing to negotiate wages.
If you made $7.00/hour in a part time job and it's still minimum wage (or more than minimum wage), then go ahead and write that down. It doesn't hurt. When they call you to accept the position, you can also ask what you'll be making. If the wage doesn't suit you, tell them you'll think about it and get back to them in about a week (less, if possible). Think it over and decide if it's worth it.
