What would be a better option between a Bachelor degree in culinary arts or an associate degree?
Asked by Desire A
If I didn't have a Bachelor's degree already, I wouldn't even think twice between one or the other but the thing is that I already have my B.A and want to have enough preparation to become an executive chef one day but is an asociate degree enough for that or do I have to go through the whole Bachelor's process over again?

Best Answer:
bachelors degree can easily equal an associates degree w/ experience which can also easily equal no degree w/ even more experience just because you have a degree doesnt mean you will land a position quicker... you need experience too. to tell you the truth, when i am hiring, i do not usually look at your education. experience is the first thing i look at on resumes. i can teach an employee certain knife skills and such, so if they have experience, and do not know something, i am willing to take the chance and teach them. some of my best chefs do not have any formal education and have gone on to work for world famous restaurants once receiving the experience from my restaurant
i have been in restaurant management for 9 years

Which school are you looking at? Anyway, I'm actually in the exact same situation as you are, I already have my B.A., I decided to get into culinary after I graduated. So in our case, an Associate's should be fine. Right now I'm getting experience first before going to school, not only is it a requirement for the school I want to go to, but I also feel it will help me get more out of school. So I'm actually getting more experience than is required. I've spoken to a lot of chefs and they all say the same thing, school is okay, it will give you a good foundation, but to become a chef, you have to get out there and work. A lot of them even say that they wished they could have done away with going to school because they could have learned everything on the job. All it really did was leave a huge debt to pay. So, there, think about it. Culinary school is just a small step to becoming an executive chef. Experience is everything.

Best idea is to get a job in the industry and go back to school once your first set of loans is paid off. Culinary school, like any art schools, is unnecessary for the truly talented, so find out where your talents lie before you spend another dime. A lot of aspiring chefs make the mistake of school before work and then find there are no good jobs for the inexperienced.
