Where are you? Are you in Canada or the United States? A really good site that you can apply at is: www.rigzone.com If you pay $90.00 you can have your resume in the "spotlight" for employers to see, however it is free to post a resume. You can apply right after high school (and I don't even think you need to graduate to work there, but do double check on that). How long you're away depends on: A.) Your location in reference to the rig (you might be able to drive home every day if you're close) B.) The shift rotation you're on C.) The time of the year (summer is usually slower and you have more time off because it's harder to move rigs when it's warm out) D.) Productivity of the rig They usually work 8 or 12 hour days, usually 3 weeks on, a week off, but like I said it totally varies. The pay is good. You won't start off drilling right away, there's positions that you'll need to work your way up. Roughneck, Motorhand, Derrickhand, Driller are some of the positions. You can do some research on the ones I stated to see what they entail. A driller can make upwards of $50.00 an hour or more, and as far as actually working on the rig, the driller is the best position. The toolpush is his manager, then there's the rig manager and engineer. Since the hours are long and so close together, even making $30.00 an hour works out to be sweet cash. You need to be determined and not lazy to work on a rig though. Get yourself in the right frame of mind before going to work there - there's no sick days usually. People can get fired for obscure things during high production time at the rig - including being sick if they suspect you're lying due to just being bored of the job or tired. Good luck. The money is good and it's good work experience. Hope that site helps, it's the best one I know of. :)
