I'm currently a CNA and if I were to take a phlebotomy class would I be a patient care technician?

I'm having trouble find a job for CNA positions in Chicago, Illinois, so I was wondering if I took a phlebotomy course would I be able to find a job as a Patient Care Technician?

It would defintely help for you to take a phlebotomy course. PCT's , like myself, do not need the class as far as my job description goes. Although other PCT's in the same health system that I work under draw blood, it is not required in my place of employment. It will be great experience, and a plus when applying for PCT positions though. Good Luck!

I believe that Patient Care Technicians also need to be certified to read EKGs.

Yeah to be a PCT you would have to take PCT class. But being a Phlebotomist would be a good job. Remember getting you first job in the health care field is usually the hardest. Hang in there! Once you get some experience it will be better!

You are already on the right track by being CNA. Yes, with or without the phlebotomy course, you can work as a PCT. Just be sure that it is a Phlebotomy course and not a Patient Care Techician program, which are really rip-offs because most skills will be learned on the job anyway and the hospital that hires you will provide you with the training anyway for free and pay you once you pass their PCT course, which is two weeks long and a practical and final exam are given at the end. But the added bonus is that with your phlebotomy certificate, you are not locked into one hole as just being a PCT, you are also able to move about as a Laboratory Technician as well. Good Luck to you
