The idea of having a single career is becoming an old fashioned one. The new fashion will be to have several careers or ways of earning money and further education will be something that countinues throughout life.

it seems that either people are getting bored easily or that these days there are SO many opportunities to try out different things. i guess some peple do it as they want new challenges or maybe feel that they want to do something more rewarding. maybe companies are also to balme as some places feel that people are begging to work in their firms so that they feel that they can afford to let go of people much easier are quicker. everyone is doing something xtra on the side - either becuase they have to or because they want to. extra money or just becuase their full time job does not allow them to have the opportunity that they have while doing something on the side - as their something on the side doesnt pay as well as thier full time job! but to answer your main question - yes its a new fashion. we are all becoming del boys!

A:
Its not a fashion in most cases its necessity, with prices of living going up but not wages.

Previously, it was possible to have a job for life, and have a recognised career progression within one company. that is very rare nowadays.

i have several. i work on a farm, im a hypnotherapist and i make funky musak for the adult entertainment industry. i have a very low attention span and could never hold on to a career and although it has cost me dearly, financially, i don't really mind because money has not been such a big driving force in my life. instead I have chased experiences. also, one day i realised that i had been on courses continuously since 1995 so i decided to keep on doing them forever.

That's true!.. what you said regarding education. In every field they are requiring further college than before. An Associates and Bachelors degree won't cut it anymore. They are even trying to make the standard a 4 year degree despite shortages. For me I think this is a positive thing! We all should focus on job security and what better way than to become certified in many things. People limit themselves by thinking they must go left or right. I completely agree, why not both? I see an upward trend of people I know with a Bachelor's degree going back to get another in a different field. I may be a bit biased since I enjoy attending school and do not ever plan to become complacent and stop all together.

by my experience it is not new. i have 5 semi-skilled blue collar trades 2 skilled and 2 skilled white collar trades. the single trade thing was being pushed when i was in my early 30's. i never went without work, but some of the time i had to prove myself [a probationary period ] before i would earn a decent wage. i would think it is more difficult today. i'm 61 years old.
