I'm considering becoming an electrician. How do I go about this, and is it hard as a female?
Asked by Lulu_D
My father was an electrician for most of his life, my Grandfather and Uncle as well. I've been trying to settle on what to do with my life and it seems to make sense- I used to help my dad out as a kid, and although I don't know a thing about it now I'd like to learn. How could I go about doing this? I'm in S.E. Mi, know of any technical colleges that do electrician apprenticeships? School was a struggle for me but I'm great with my hands, how hard is it to become an electrician? (Not necessarily a master electrician, even just a journeyman?) Also... I know that this is a mostly male field of work. I'm nervous about facing a lot of resistance from men if I try to do this- not that it would stop me, but do you think this is a valid concern or are the men in this field much more open to women joining "their" work force, so to speak? Thanks all!

You shouldn't find that much resistance out there. The most difficult part will be the heavy lifting and the vulgar atmoshere )construction sites). Other than that I think you'll find acceptance pretty easily. Go to the site I link below and you'll find all the info you need about the electrical trade and what it's like to be an electrician. No, its generally fine for women to be electricians, since its not a line of work that involves a lot of heavy lifting, grunt work etc. You just have to be good with your hands. If you wanted to be a construction worker or longshoreman or something you would get a lot of resistance but for an electrician not so much.
