International Marketing differs significantly from marketing in a single country. You have to take into account all of the following: Foreign exchange rates and currency policies. Some countries do not float their currency, while others have exchange controls through a central bank, etc. Others do not allow you to repatriate funds back home. Ideological and cultural norms of target countries. The shape, size, color, name, of the product may be offensive in some countries. The need to offer your product in the local language, or languages. This includes not only the product, but manuals, instructions, and marketing collateral ( ads, brochures, press releases, etc ) Your selling model : direct sales through a branch office, or indirect sales through a distributor or reseller. Are you selling via retailers, or VAR, OEM, type channels? What is the typical competition in those countries? You will have to do a competitive analysis and competitive positioning study. Product life cycle. In some countries, PLCs are shorter. Duties, customs, and shipping/insurance issues. Power ( voltage, frequency and current ) considerations if your product is dependent on external power. Regional programs such as NAFTA, etc, that could help in waiver of duties and taxes.
