Sewing Machine Mechanic_Technician Demand?
Asked by OfficeBob
Hi
Does anybody know if a person can make a go at becoming a
Sewing Machine Mechanic_Technician?
I am a lover of fine tools, machinery and electronics.
The overhead seems reasonable and manageable.
I also like smaller cities and towns.
I have a modest pension from Military Service.
Thanks

If you have a true desire to become a Sewing Machine Technician, there is always a demand for your service. I have been repairing home and industrial machines for over 35 years, and have never been without work. If you like small towns, the work may be limited due to the smaller pool of people. The average yearly income for a new mechanic may be under $20K, but once you have more experience and/or a following of customers, your compensation can jump up to over $150K, depending on how much you want to work. Just remember that it can be a very frustrating type of work as you must deal closely with people. I tell people that the best part of my job is I get to work with women, the worst part of my job is I have to work with women.

I'd like to add some more information and ideas. Don't just limit yourself to servicing home sewing machines. Think about commercial machines, to include the various types of sewing machines, embroidery machines, overlock and coverstitchers, long-arm quilting machines, etc.
I belong to an embroidery business discussion group and there is a serviceperson who makes road trips and announces them to the list. If someone needs his services, they contact him and he adds them to the itinerary. I think he makes a decent living at this.
This is something you might enjoy doing if you dont mind travel. You will have a hard time making a living if you live in a small town and aren't willing to travel because there is going to be a limited number of people who own machines and need them serviced.
