You need to get the BOSIET offshore survival training certificate, and an offshore medical before you are allowed to be considered to go to UK waters. The course is easy enough, except the helicopter crash simulations underwater which I found quite scary but on the whole, ok! If you dont have a company to pay for you, you will have to pay it yourself, its about £1000 all in (including accomodation). And it would be a gamble for you, because you may not get work after doing the course. But without the course you will def not get work! Dont start applying until you have passed the course, because companies cant consider anyone to go without the it. Although, you could make some good contacts on the course, and that could help a lot to find work, otherwise its just a case of phoning around. A lot of the work is temporary contracts, so you may only be employed for 2 weeks a time. :o) PS offshore companies love ex military people! Whatever your job was in the military could probably be transfered easily into an offshore position. Roustabouts are for people with no previous experience so you could find a job thats better suited to your abilities I think there is some kind of skills transfer course specifically for ex militaries to take them into oil & gas, you should check with your military place, I dont know who runs it, but I remember speaking to an ex RAF-er who did something like that to get offshore.

agree with zwinky on most parts. cost for your rgit offshore is about £700 and a medical is £70. very few companies will employ you without them, some will in shutdown season as everybodys looking for men. try the offshore drilling companies for rousties, they,re normally a bunch of no hopers and very little brains, (only joking lads) but someone with a little bit of nous can get to the next level. otherwise the catering companies employ stewards who look after the rooms and galley, these need no previous experience either. try a google search for aramark, ccg, universal sodhexo, that will get you the addresses. now is the time to start doing things as the shutdown season starts and the north sea is busy. your ex military background will help you fit in with the offshore routine. the offshore course only takes 3 days and combine the medical as well. the major offshore induction(bosiet) takes place at rgit montrose up here in aberdeen but there are other places as well, fleetwood is one i know of. when and if you do go ahead then register with as many recruitment agencies as you can, ie, mcgregor energy, tulloch, atlantic resource, google search for more. try the local jobcenters for help as they may give you a grant to get started up, highlands and islands do this, it depends where you live good luck
