How hard is it to get a job at a hotel?
Asked by linda m
I applied for housekeeping positions at Marriott Hotels, and although a lot of people are telling me I should try to get a front-desk job because of my pretty face, I want to start off at the bottom and work my way up. Plus I'm guaranteed pretty good hours that way. So anyone knows anything about the hotel business??....

You should try for front desk first!! Housekeeping is a hard job and in most cases they get paid the worst!!! I have worked at a Holiday Inn, a Marriott, and now I work for a Hilton hotel. You will rarely get the recognition you'd deserve to go up a higher level if you work for housekeeping. Also, front desk does pay more and the job is a lot easier!!

I've worked housekeeping, they will hire anyone without a record for that. I think desk pays more though. Until then you can try these. They don't ask for a credit card or try to charge you anything, like the scam sites. You won't get rich though. It's only about $100 per week. They pay by Paypal and check. I have posted pictures of Paypal payments I received, as proof. http://bestpaidsurveysitesandgpts.blogspot.com/

I currently work as a housekeeper at a timeshare resort and honestly it is not that hard at all. I had no prior experience and they still hired me. It's going on a year there now. You can apply for both front desk and housekeeping. Just pick whatever you think is better for you.

You want to start at the bottom - big mistake..... start as high as you can so you can so you will be noticed sooner.

If you're looking for a job as a front desk clerk it's relatively easy. As long as you apply at the right places. If you lack experience in the lodging industry you might want to choose a smaller hotel like a Mom and Pop style business. Once you've got experience than you can apply at the Marriott, Best Western etc. I work for a local motel right now which is a Mom and Pop type of business and I've never worked at a hotel before. According to my manager if you want to be a desk clerk at the Hilton you should have at least an AA. Definitely stay away from the house keeping, as it can be hard work. I can't really say from experience as a house keeper but, by comparison to being a desk clerk there's no contest. Being a desk clerk is mostly dealing with customers, not handling cleaning supplies and such. In other words being a desk clerk is much less physically demanding it's just easier. I am positive you will be happier as a desk clerk.
